Chelsea is a diverse trumpet player in the Austin area, currently pursuing a DMA at the University of Texas at Austin as the trumpet studio teaching assistant. Chelsea also holds degrees from Baylor University (BM '11) and Southern Methodist University (MM '13, PD '15), with additional studies at the University of Colorado - Boulder.
With extensive experience in trumpet solo repertoire, orchestra and wind ensemble literature, chamber music, new music, and everything in-between, Chelsea has much to offer as both a performer and a teacher. She has performed across the United States, as well as brief tours of Belgium, southern France, and China.
A native of Dallas, Texas, Chelsea is an active freelancer in Austin and Dallas, having the opportunity to perform with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, the Colorado Symphony Orchestra, the Austin Symphony Orchestra, the Dallas POPS, and the Dallas Wind Symphony, in addition to sharing the stage with pop artists Adele, Ben Folds, and Broadway legend Idina Menzel.
As a soloist, Chelsea has been successful competing at a national level. She has been selected as a finalist at the National Trumpet Competition twice, placing 2nd in 2015, as well as being selected as a semi-finalist multiple years for the ensemble, undergraduate, and graduate divisions
Chelsea's chamber experience is extensive, having played in contemporary and traditional ensembles for over 15 years. As a member of Brazen Brass 5, Chelsea shared the stage with the Dallas Symphony Brass Quintet, competed at the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition in the May 2015, and held a two-week residency at the Shanghai American School in December 2015. Chelsea was also a member of SMU's new music ensemble, SYZYGY, recording an album of student composers' works in 2014 and working with Nadia Sirota of yMusic. During her time at CU Boulder, the Graduate Brass Quintet worked with the Aspen Music School and Festival to teach and perform for area schools and residents in the Aspen Valley twice a year. She has received chamber coaching Charles Villarrubia (Rhythm & Brass), Matt Albert (Eighth Blackbird), Canadian Brass, the American Brass Quintet, and the Army Brass Quintet.
Chelsea has had the opportunity to play for some of the most prominent trumpet players today, including Phil Smith, Chris Martin, Michael Martin, Billy Hunter, Michael Sachs, Clement Saunier, Marco Blaauw, Gabriele Cassone, Thomas Stevens, Barbara Butler, Ryan Anthony, Jens Lindemann, Ronald Romm, William Pfund, Ray Mase, Kevin Cobb, Manny Laureano, Ray Sasaki, Allan Dean, Allen Vizzutti, and Vincent DiMartino. Chelsea trumpet ensemble arrangement of Bela Bartok's String Quartet No. 2 was performed by the SMU Trumpet Ensemble as an opening piece for Cancer Blow's 2015 Night of the Principals, in addition to placing 2nd at NTC.
Chelsea's primary teachers include Wiff Rudd, Tom Booth, Ryan Anthony, Marie Speziale, Billy Hunter, Ray Sasaki, and Steve Fitts.
Chelsea currently lives in south Austin with her husband, Daniel (an elementary music teacher), and her two Shiba Inus, Knox and Riley.
